Biography: Elvis Stojko is a Canadian figure skater who achieved significant milestones in his career, including three World Championship titles, two Olympic silver medals, and seven Canadian National titles. Renowned for his technical prowess, Stojko was the first to land a quadruple-double jump combination in competition.
He was born in Newmarket, Ontario, and was named after the famous singer Elvis Presley. His heritage includes a Hungarian mother and a Slovenian father. Stojko later lived in Ajijic, Mexico, eventually returned to Canada where he married Gladys Orozco.
Stojko took up skating at the age of four and won his first trophy at eleven. By the 1991 World Championships, he had made history by landing the quadruple-double jump combination. His Olympic debut at the 1992 Games saw him finish in 7th place, yet he managed to secure third place at that year's World Championships. The following year, 1993, he became the World runner-up.
Stojko's first World Championship victory came in 1994, a title complemented by his Olympic silver medal. Despite an ankle injury, he successfully defended his World title in 1995 and, in 1996, executed the first quadruple toe loop-triple toe loop combination at the World Championships.
The 1996-97 season was notable for Stojko as he won the Champions Series Final and claimed his third World Championship title in 1997. He overcame injury once again to earn a silver medal at the 1998 Olympics.
Transitioning to professional skating in 2002, Stojko also showcased his talents as an actor in the TV movie Ice Angel (2000) and later in Ice Girls (2016). Outside the rink, he pursued interests such as kart racing and offered his insights as a commentator.
